valves - try one
I got one exhasut valve out today (too much time replacing the garbage can shack). I need to get hold of a valve compressor.

De-grease
No new pictures.
I spent Saturday morning in the degreasing tank with the oil pan and timing cover. I also learned that the screw I found rattleing around in the pan was one of two that retain the wrist pin in each piston.

Pan Off
The timing gears are helical.
The "oil pan" has a screen above the sump area, and oil pump. Oil is pumped up into the main bearing, then passes through collars around the journals which carry the oil out to the large connecting rod bearings.
Instead of seals around the ends of the crank and cam, the Renault has a single helical gear, which only serves to drive the oil back into the crankcase.

The Clutch
I finally found the correct length of M10x1.5 screws to allow me to back of the compression in the spring without having bits flying across the room. Removing the aluminum cluth cone, i was suprized to find the business card of Sheldon Rosenthal taped to the inside. I don't know Mr. Rosenthal, but his name rung a bell, as he had relined the clutch in my father's Oldsmobile. This is one less thing I will have to restore.
